Bulgarian Christmas Eve Meal

Christmas is a very important holiday in Bulgaria. It is the time of the year when people are calmer, better and more thankful for all the things they have. Understandably, the meal on Christmas Eve should be rich – there should be 7, 9 or 11 dishes. In addition, all of them ought to be lenten because of the rules of fasting.
The dishes usually include sarma, pickles, a salad made of cabbage and carrots, potato salad, bean soup, stuffed pepper, rice with plums, fortune pita, which is a pastry with a fortune in it, all kinds of nuts and a lot of fruits. Of course, the meal should be accomplished by rakia or wine.
At and after 12 o’clock Bulgarians can eat whatever they want, including meat dishes, as the fasting is over. They often choose to have pork chops served on their table.
Christmas is a wonderful holiday, which we all should spend with our family in the comfort of our home, enjoying all the wonderful dishes we are lucky to have.
